Vintage Jacob Bengel Brickwork (Mauerwerk) Orange and Black Necklace – SOLD
Vintage Jacob Bengel Brickwork (Mauerwerk) Orange and Black Necklace – SOLD
Vintage Jacob Bengel Brickwork (Mauerwerk) Orange and Black Necklace, famous brickwork necklace with orange and black cold painted enamel. WOW this is a fabulous piece, quite unique for the brickwork pattern and the metal tubes in different lengths to create a curved shaped necklace.
There is little wear on the back just a few black marks, very minor but noted for accuracy. Should be able to be seen in the photos, so please check. Paintwork is excellent. There is a bolt ring clasp and the brickwork links are of the flat shape design. There is a mark on the clasp ring which reads – ‘Guarantee’ which is often found on Bengel pieces.
Bengel was famous for his chain linking designs and this is another one of his finest. It is referred to as mauerwerk (masonry) brickwork design, you will see many pictures of this design in either of the 2 Jakob Bengel books.

Information
They can be found in many colour ways, red, light and dark green, light and dark blue, black with the rarer more unusual colours being lime green, burnt orange and yellow. Very often they have 2 colourways i.e. black with another colour to enhance the brickwork pattern.
The brickwork pattern comes in 2 styles one where the ‘brick’ is curved and more rounded and this one where the brickwork panel is flat. You will notice in many of these designs that the panels aren’t all the same size. The reason for this was so curves, corners and graduated shapes could be created.
Often the paint is either missing completely or has started to chip but this is an excellent example. This item was bought from a collector and hasn’t been worn in the 50 years that she has had it.
Bengel pieces aren’t signed, sometimes they may have a mark on the clasp ring which reads – ‘Guarantee’ or Made in Germany, but that is as much as I’ve ever seen. I believe they did have swing tags, hence they were removed and thrown away before wearing.
Size: Necklace is 16″ long, end to end. The centre width of the necklace is 1 1/4″.
Condition: Excellent Vintage
Date: 1930s
